Simba's penis is hanging out and looks irritated and slightly swollen. He fusses when he pees and he also has been pulling at it.
I have been using ky jelly to try to keep it moistened.

I called the emergency vets and the vet said to keep watching him and if he gets worse bring him in. I am trying to make it a few more hours until the vet's office opens around 8am.

I need some advice on what I can do to help him right now. Is there anything else other than what I am already doing to make him more comfortable and to keep him distracted so he doesn't mess with it? I don't have an ecollar, I accidentally left it at home (I'm visiting family in FL right now).

I'm worried about my little man. If anyone can give me any advice or ideas I would really appreciate it! Also, if anyone knows what would cause this to happen then please let me know so I know what to ask the vet when I take him.

You are doing everything right, keeping the penis moist is very important. Can you make an e-collar?

Does it retract after he urinates? When Muchu had this issue, the vet did a fecal, urinalysis, checked for crystals and nerve damage.

Give him lots of fluids, you will need some urine for the urinalysis.

I am with Liezl on this, keep fluids going. and try t make an e-collar out of whatever you can get your hands on. Keep it moist with the ky and keep him busy/distracted

It won't go back in at all. When he pees and poops he goes running around like it's on fire. He will stop for a second and mess with it and fuss then start running around again.
He won't let me go near his rear end at all. He even nipped ate when I went to give him a chest massage to try to calm him down. He thought I was going to touch his penis. He never bites me so that is way out of character for him. He's my big sweet teddy bear.
I have him cuddled in my lap in my shirt and every so often he starts messing with it again. Licking it and pulling it with his teeth and fussing.


I don't have anything to make an ecollar with. I just rumaged through everything looking for something I could rig up as one.

I tried giving him treats to distract him. The only one he would take was a fruit loop. He only ate part of it and didn't even bother cleaning himself up when he was done. That's not like him either. He's usually very neurotic about cleaning himself after he eats.

I've also been trying to give him watermellon and regular water. He doesn't want anything to do with it. He takes a lick or two of the watermellon then turns his head away.

Ok, long shot but worth the try. Do you think he has UTI? If his urine is not smelling stronger and this seem sudden, there is a possibility that there is something wrapped around the base keeping it from retracting.

Can you give me some ideas on what household items I can use to make an ecollar?
I have gauze, no-stick tape (it's the stuff that sticks to itself), and fleece.

I'm not sure what else I could safely use to make one.

You can also mix pedialyte with yogurt, see if he will take that.

I am sorry but have no other advice. I thankfully havent had any hands on problems with this.

Are there any plastic containers in the house you can cut to make an e-collar? The lid part might work, may be too stiff but its worth a try? use duck tape, or any tape to close it. A piece of an ace bandage or a bandaid can be uses to cover the edge of the plastic if you cant find any moleskin.

Thinking along the lines of the e-jacket, maybe a strip of fleece around his body with a large knot by his belly so ts in the way of him trying to clean his penis. Did that make any sense?

The best I can do is to pray for you and your little one right now. It is important you stay calm so you can help him. Stay peaceful. Keep peaceful and healing thoughts. I pray now for you.

I don't think he has a UTI. His urine smelled normal. That's the first thing I did was smell his urine. Unless he's just starting to get one?
His poop looks ok but it comes out at the same time as his urine. Normally he poops then pees or pees then poops. He never does it at the same time like this.

I tried to check to see if maybe a hair got tangled around it but I wasn't able to get a really good look. From what I could see I didn't see anything wrapped around it. But he wasn't being very still for me. He's scared I'm going to touch it so he flips out and gets nippy with me.



I can try to get a picture and post it if I can get him to sit still for one while I lift his tail.

Brandi I asked a good friend of mine to have a look at your post as she had the same issue not long ago with her little Munchkin. She is currently in a meeting but will have a look soon.

I don't think we will be able to see from a photo what' s going on, so I suggest you don't stress him out any further.

Hang in there, see if you can dish something up for an e-collar.

If you don't have anything to make an e-collar, you can use the gauze, no-stick tape (it's the stuff that sticks to itself), and fleece and do something similar to the picture above until you can get him to the vet. It will not prevent him from getting to his penis but it should make it harder and give you the necessary time to prevent any damage.

If I roll up some fleece like a hotdog then wrap it around his neck and use tape to secure it do you think that would work? Kind of like a neck brace that humans wear?

I'm still working on the ecollar thing. He gave me a nice bite on my finger and made me bleed. He's not too happy with me right now but I'm still trying.

Simba is 1 1/2. He matured at a very early age too. He has already had one set of joeys. Him and his wife mated last week. I caught them in the act. Could his hormones still be going crazy even though they mated last week?
I've never had any of my other males do this all the years I've had them.

What time is it over there? All you can do now is to keep it lubricated, keep pushing fluids, and prevent little Simba from messing with it until you can get him to the vet.

Ok, so he is already 1 1/2 years of age. Then it's probably not hormonal. I'm not sure, I only experienced it with boys around the age of 12 to 16 weeks. My only other thought if it's not UTI is like I said, something could be wrapped around the base.

I have noticed that he is peeing more often than he normally does. Usually he just goes once when he wakes up then he's good for a few hours. He has gone 3 times in the last hour. Is that a symptom of a UTI?

I have a video of a penis examination, if you are interested let me know and I will email it to you. There is a possibility that they will sedate him to properly see what's going on since he is in so much pain and pulling at it.

Yes it is, but it can also be that the penis is irritated and that will make him go more frequently.

Hi Brandi, I had a similar problem with my little guy Munchkin not so long ago. He had a favourite toy that turned out to be a nightmare. He somehow managed to open one of his caterpillars legs and ingested some of the stuffing. Somewhow the stuffing went through his system and then when he tried to poop it out, a few strands of the stuffing got wrapped around the tip of his penis. The more he licked it the more stuck and wrapped it got. You mentioned that you would check if there was hair around it. It only takes a few strands to get tangled around his penis as hair is very strong. He probably doesn't want to put it back cause it feels yukky..... I also remember seing a thread somewhere on GC that their penis can come out too far and then it gets stuck. Luckily with Munchkin, it was on his tip so we could see it, but maybe with this little guy, something has gotten stuck at the base of his penis? It is frustrating not knowing how to help..... Let me see if I can find the thread and then I will send it through. Good luck and hang in there.....

I just hate seeing my baby in so much pain and not feeling well. I wish it would hurry up and be 8am so I can get him to the vets so he can start feeling better. I feel like he is one of my kids. I just want to take all of his pain away. I feel so helpless.

I keep trying but nothing seems to be working. I'm on bite #3 now on my fingers from trying to stop him. I know he doesn't mean it. I try to keep thinking that as he's sinking his teeth into me but that doesn't make the bites any less painful!

Is vasaline okay to use on them? I was wondering if that would help the urine not to sting so much when he pees. It seems like the ky jelly just washes right off each time.

Oh, the emergency vet I spoke with did say adding a little sugar to the ky jelly will help with the inflamation but she said the only thing she would be concerned about with using the sugar is that it may make him lick it even more.
I've never heard of using sugar for inflamation have you? I'm not going to use it but I just thought that sounded odd.

I just remembered my vet mentioning and looking to see if Muchu had a penis prolapse. That is also a possibility.

I have read about it, but have not used it myself. The KY should be fine till you get to the vet.

You may want to read up on several things as you are not going to your regular vet.

PH levels - A normal Ph level for sugar gliders should be around 5-7

Brandi, do you have a bottle of soda? You can cut the top off and pad the edges and it will make a MacGyver E-Collar. It's not the best, but temporarially it will work to help him out.

I just went through penis issues with my Ryan and they are no fun. You need to make sure that he stays lubed up with the KY. If he starts to dry out you could be facing an amputation issue. Plus it will help to cool and soothe his tissues. He definately needs to get into the vets office and will need pain medication and an antibiotic.

I don't have any bottled soda just cans. Now I wished I used the bottled ones.
The only other thing I could think of that might work would be one of my kid's book covers. It's one of the soft covers so it's flexible. Do you think that would work? I think my kids would understand why mommy cut up their book.

Now he is trying to attack me when I try to put the ky jelly on him. It's also looking more swollen and getting redder.

Brandi, is there no way you can take him in? I am scared that it would become necrotic or even that he will hurt himself. He can cause a lot of damage in seconds.

I'm calling the vet in about 45min to see if they are in their office yet. They open at 8am (in an hour and 20 minutes) but I am guessing they should be in the office before that. I hope they are.

If I don't get anyone when I call in 45 minutes then I may just load him up and go sit by there door and wait for them.

Brandi, can you wrap him in fleece, to prevent him messing with it? I know it's early morning hours and he is most probably very active and alert, but maybe he will allow you to wrap him and comfort him.

The tissue will become darker and darker until it goes black.

I tried wrapping him. He bit me VERY hard when I did that!

Well, I just tried to call and I got a recording saying they don't open until 8:30am. They changed their times! Now I have to wait another hour until they open! They didn't even update their website with their new hours!

Hey all. I'm getting updates from Brandi as she's at the vet with Simba.

When they got there, Simba's penis was even more red and swollen. The docs have done an initial exam and have determined that they need to give him anesthesia in order to look more closely to see what the problem is. The plan at this point is to thoroughly examine him and they will put his penis back inside and possibly stitch it. Then, they'll treat him for whatever the cause is. They'll keep him for now, although they haven't given Brandi a definitive length of time. They will only amputate as a last resort.

They cannot stitch it. He won't be able to go to the bathroom. I have seen this done by a vet before. When they cut the stitch out urine just exploded out of the little guy. Don't let them stitch it.

Sorry guys, been a busy day so I haven't been able to update for Brandi. I'll let her tell you the nitty gritty because it's quite involved...but bottom line is that he's at the vet, they are NOT happy with the vet care all around and it hasn't been easy. Apparently they wouldn't agree to consult with another vet, nor would they talk with Brandi's regular vet (her regular vet wasn't in today, which is why they're at another). It's been a very taxing day for Brandi, to say the least. The last message that I got from Brandi this evening is that Simba is not doing well and has taken a turn for the worse...he's in ICU now. I don't know anything further but will do my best to update if she's unable to do so. Please keep her and Simba Man in your thoughts this evening.

Brandi just got a call that so far, Simba is stable but will be kept in ICU. They will update Brandi tonight if something changes, otherwise she'll talk with them right away in the morning. He isn't well and can't move very well in his collar and because he's sore. Poor baby. Will let you know if anything changes! Brandi's regular vet will take over tomorrow.

Hoping and praying that he continues to progress and his regular vet is able to bring him to a complete recovery (and fire the other vet!)

Dear Lord I hope that regular vet knows more than this one & that this poor baby can hang on that long!

I wish I cruised GC more & I could have helped her make an ecollar out of a butter, sour creme, mealie, just about anything lid! Band aids, surgical tape, electrical tape, just about any tape around the edge & a staple would have worked while she could have kept an eye on him. for starts ky jelly does nothing for a swollen penis..

in cases like this,
an e-collar/e-jacket is a must made from anything a paper plate would be better than nothing at all.

a little preparation H for the swelling
a little orjel for pain management
neosporin for an anti-biotic
silvadyne or a burn ointment to protect the irritation from the urine.

have them contact someone with experience in these areas ASAP BEFORE sending them off to a vet who may not know what they are doing..

the owners are trying to do what is right by their glider, and sometimes is totally unprepared for what an inexperienced vet in this area may do.

when NavyChiefWife gets back in here, I am sure she will update everyone, but right now she is really concerned about the life of her glider.

Brandi sent me pics this morning. That vet should have the same thing done to her!

The hospital called her about an hour ago. I haven't heard anything back yet.

Sending many prayers for this baby! No glider should have to go through what he has, at the hands of a so called 'vet'.

The vet, from what I am being told, was one at the University of Florida vet clinic - a place I have referred tons of glider owners to, especially for after hours emergencies, as it is the closest one to many of us in this area.

If indeed this mangle job was done by them as I am hearing, I am shocked and saddened.

Please pray for this glider! Simba needs the prayers in the worst way right now!

What I have been told was done to him is an atrocity and all I can do right now is cry for him and Brandi and hope to God she gets him to her vet or another that will consult with someone who has at least an ounce of common sense and some experience with this type of injury and issue, because obviously the one this glider was taken to doesn't even know general glider anatomy!

The only update I can give is second hand knowledge, but I am told the glider was only flossing in the first place (but did scrape his penis slightly) - not a major issue to begin with, that has now turned into something that could threaten his life. I am being told that the vet shoved the penis back in and stitched the entire cloaca shut - not once, but twice (he managed to break through the stitches once). I am also being told the glider could not urinate or defecate ALL NIGHT and that Brandi told the vets to remove the stitches and they refused! She begged them to consult with other glider vets, and they refused! This vet, if what I am told is accurate, is a menace to gliders!

How sad for poor Simba and for poor Brandi who is so upset and is having to deal with this. If only her regular vet had been available when this problem began... for that matter, if Brandi had known who she could contact directly (not just via a forum) when she got worried in the first place.

with Brandi's permission I am going to update everyone from the beginning...

Brandi took her glider to the vet, first off they made her sign an electronic screen, then printed out what she was signing..

they told her that they were going to take Simba back , put him under to examine him, then they would probably try to shove the penis back in, then stitch it to hold it in, then try to find out the cause. she voiced her concerns then and told them she did not feel comfortable with them stitching him. They reassured her they would not do anything till they talked to her. right after that Brandi called me, I got Mary on the phone and we were talking to her, she told us what they wanted to do. we explained to her that stitching was not an option and that forcing the penis in, could damage the sheaths, that the swelling needed to be taken care of and then the penis would retract on it's own. We also gave her the phone number for dr fronefield who in our opinion is an expert in this particular area for them to do a phone consult, we also discussed dr tristan. she tried to contact her vet but he was out of the office. so she hung up and called the vet back and told them she did not want them to stitch ... well it was too late, they already stuffed the penis back in and stitched it, they gave the glider lidocane to help reduce the swelling which was not working, and gave him baytril and buphnorphin and they expressed his anal glands. also something only a knowledgeable vet in this area should do as the anal glans are multi-chambered and the risk of damaging the walls makes it a very risky procedure. She told them that she wanted them to do a phone consult of a glider knowledgeable vet who had a lot of experience, they refuse the consult, and she told them she wanted her vet to be part of the treatment team. they said they would not allow that, that they will tell her vet what they are doing and nothing else. the glider was placed in an incubator at that time to
recover from the surgery. she told them to remove the stitches they said they would. she went back to the vet that night to take him his food and see him. they had the stitches in and he had pushed his penis out through the stitch, so the pushed it back in and put yet another stitch in. she so badly wanted to take him out of there as when she saw him he was in ICU and was wrenching and crying in pain trying to defecate past the stitches.she was trying desperately to reach another vet so she could have someplace to take him so she told them to give her an hour , they told her that either she take him then or leave him there for them to do what they felt he needed. she had no choice but to leave him. she was given her bill and was told that they may amputate the penis, and if so, they would hold him for 2 more days till he recoups, and it would cost her a couple hundred dollars more. This morning They told her that they had another surgery as he pushed his penis past the stitch again, and they again put yet more stitches in. they told her he did defecate while in surgery. By this time she is livid, and contacted her vet, he is awaiting Simba to get to him, armed with fronefields and tristans number. She is currently on her way to get simba to take him to her vet.

as you can see his penis now looks like hamburger, they are talking about amputating it now, and hopefully Brandi will get there before they do.

I've said this somewhere else, but it scares me to death to think that eventually I will need an emergency vet & will get a moron for a doctor. We are all not lucky enough to live close to truly glider knowledgeable vets

I want to thank Bourbon for posting the info she posted pertaining penis/cloaca issues such as this. I know we walk a thin line between 'Rx-ing' & 'suggesting' but when so many of us have to travel to get to REAL glider vets THIS is the kind of info & products we need to have on hand, & know HOW & WHEN to use them.

I will always be thankful for learning various things on this forum from those already educated & experienced. That said, we should always use our best judgement taking advice from anyone on the boards & this is the best reason to read threads such as this to gain as much info as possible to be able to weigh what people in various experiences have used/done etc.

She is at the vets now trying to get him, the question is, will Simba be held hostage till she pays the bill. according to other vets they can not stop her from taking her glider.

the concerns right now is not only the penis, but the damage that may have been done to the penis shaft as well as the damage to the anal glands.

the lower area is very swelled but at this time we do not know if it is a back up of urine, feces, or if the anal glands have some serious damage.

she was told they will not remove the stitches that her vet will have to do it.

this glider is in very bad shape and we are all praying that he makes it through this.

If they hold him hostage & she hasn't the funds, start making calls & I'm sure the community will get him outta there.

Pretty sure we can't talk any more about that here on the boards though.

Between phone calls and texts with Bourbon and being on the phone with Brandi and Connie...I bet Verizon will come up with a new "Simba Plan" for me.

So here goes. Just spoke with Brandi. When she got to her vet with Simba, his first words were, "he's a mess!" Well, we knew that! He said that had he been available, the first thing he would have done would be to put an anti-inflammatory on it to make the swelling go down. That's neither here nor there, but I wanted to point it out nonetheless. He said that right now, it's impossible to take the purse stitch out because Simba's penis is still incredibly swollen, so much so that it would be risky to take the stitch out now. He did use an anti-inflammatory while Brandi was there and a small bit of the swelling went down, but still not enough. On a happy note (and for those of you that know Brandi's gliders, you'll get a chuckle)...when the vet pulled out the syringe, Simba tried his hardest to lean over to him to get it! LOL Simba was a hand raised baby, and not only that, Brandi will oftentimes have special bonding time with her gliders and feed them treats with a syringe. They all absolutely LOVE it! So, as soon as Simba saw it, it was treat time! LOL So, back to it. After further examination, it turns out Simba has chewed a small portion off of the tip of his penis. The old vet didn't notice this.

Brandi's vet will make a phone call this afternoon to the old vet to find out exactly what was done. Then, he will consult with Dr. Tristan to work up a course of action. Simba is being monitored at the vet this afternoon. Brandi will go there later this afternoon and is going to bring him home this evening. The doctor feels that it will reduce some of his stress, being home with mommy. She will then bring him back tomorrow morning so that the treatment can continue. The hope is that the swelling will have gone down enough to be able to remove the stitch so that they can begin to figure out just what can be done.

The new vet says that the initial problem, his penis staying out, likely came from overactive hormones and excessive flossing (I know y'all know this, just relaying info) but that with as uber-hormonal as Simba is, it will likely happen again so the decision has been made to neuter him. When this will happen is up in the air and Brandi's vet and Dr. Tristan will determine that time frame once they consult with one another.

Brandi did ask the vet if Simba was going to be all right. The vet said that at this point, with how he looks and what's happened, it's just too early to tell. So please, send every thought, every prayer, every well wish Brandi and Simba's way.

Brandi is on her way to get Simba for the evening. She's SO excited to be able to love and cuddle on him!

The vet was able to get a bit more of the swelling down this afternoon but it still has a ways to go before they can take the stitch out. He was, however, able to loosen the stitch a bit so that Simba can go potty. The vet sub-q'd him with vitamins and he even got him to eat a little. Simba seems to be a little more comfortable and is acting a little happier - all signs that he's a strong little boy and feels all the love from everyone!

Prayers for simba and his mommy if I were her id get her baby feeling better and then get a lawyer!
