I need to make everyone aware of a situation that has came to my attention. I had gotten a few new gliders (while still reducing my numbers) and they have been found to have a parasite. I am treating my gliders and have offered to pay for the vet checks of those who have recently purchased gliders from me. But, I wanted to make this publicly known because one of the glider purchased was taken to the Ohio Gathering and I want to make sure EVERY glider owner that was there and MAY have come into contact with one of my gliders is aware of the situation. I have contacted the people who these gliders came from, and will let them take care of their own gliders, I WILL not start a drama post and will not go any further arguing this post my concern is with gliders and it will stay at caring for the gliders only. I do take my gliders to the vet with in a week of getting them but the parasite can stay hidden for a while so it was not noticed in past fecals until now

Kris, I'm sorry you are having to go through this and I wish your gliders all quick recoveries. This post was very responsible and may help with early detection to prevent other gliders from becoming seriously ill.

I wanted to add that the parasite these gliders may have is contagious but from what my vet has told me, it takes about a month before another glider is able to catch it.. . . .something like that. More than likely, the parasite would not have been passed during the short weekend, but it's good to know just in case.

Kris, Zaria (and Zayne) both went Friday last week (the day after I got them) and fecals were clear. I had to take Lucas today for a health cert, so took them again because Lynsie made me aware of the parasites and still all clear. I'm gonna take them back again in a week also, per the vet recommendation.

I'm taking Brando into the vet in the morning. I cant stress enough how important it is to notify people of a possible problem there may be. And Kris has gone above and beyond in letting all of us know about it. I will post again tomorrow after Brando see's our vet. Thank you again Kris!!!!

Suz there are no symptoms as far as I have seen But Lynsies glider did have some she would be better to ask... BUT I had a smear done so they could find them... Idk what the exact parasite is but my vet and Lynsies vet have told us that it is from the hook worm family.. but it is not hook worms..

Suz, I'm pretty sure that my vet just did the smear, it only took her a few mintues to run the fecal and find the parasites. She said it wasn't just a parasite, it was a class of parasites in the same family as hookworm. She did give me a really long name but it didn't even process in my brain. The only symptoms Lidia had were she had a weird bald spot on her belly below her pouch, she acted perfectly fine up until the night before last when she looked wet down there and started licking and hissing a lot. She is now on panacur and smz tmp.

Any suggestions on what would be best to clean with to destroy this wormy booger? I ask because I was part of a RR and am concerned about cross contamination. I normally do not use any toxic chemicals in my home. I do all my cleaning with vinegar, baking soda, essential oils and murphys oil soap so if I need to up my artillery before I begin my scrub down or anyone has any particular info on what it takes to kill the lil boogers I'd like to know.

Kris the infestation may not have started from the breeder you got your gliders from- it could have come from further down the line- so hopefully everyone will pass the word backwards once they hear gliders of theirs may have been at risk.

Not sure Angel, but you can't go wrong with good ol' bleach. I mean, they use it in hospitals and nurseries and not much survives it. I know I'm doing a good bleaching! Does anyone know if Suki was in direct contact with other gliders along the way? I know he shared a kennel at one point, did he not? Were they in separate pouches? Lynsie - Panacur and what else? Our vet is going to allow me to simply treat mine as if they do have the parasite because waiting a month to be sure is gonna be nerve wracking! KrisD - I know this was a difficult post to make, but you did the right thing. Being responsible isn't always fun, but in the end, no one can say anything negative because you stepped up to the plate when it was necessary.

Laurie-Suki was in my care from Sunday morning til Monday morning and he was not in direct contact with other gliders during that time. There were other gliders in the vehicle w/us but they were not involved in any of this other than their contact w/Suki in my vehicle. I kept Suki in his bonding pouch from the time I got him til we got to my house on Sunday night. I game him water and treats throughout the day but always gave them in his pouch to try and minimize his stress level. He slept in the pop up that came with him-I did add some rings and toys but those were from my home and I wash and dry everything here on the antibacterial setting on my washer and dryer. He never went past my living room or came in contact w/any of my gliders in any way. I did use our regular feeding dishes but those have all been through the dishwasher so no concerns there. I have several rescues and am a stickler for quarantine and now am very grateful for that. I can only hope that anyone who may have become lax in that area will see this post and be encouraged to always be more safe than sorry. Kris thank u for doing the responsible thing in this situation.

Laurie, each glider was in it's own pouch in the kennel. They never came in direct contact. The minute we arrived at the gathering, the glider in question was given to his new mom. Suki stayed with me the entire weekend, in his own pop up cage, with separate dishes used only for him. He was also never taken into the gathering. He stayed in my room the whole weekend. But, because they did travel together in the kennel, I am taking my girls in on Monday, just to be on the safe side.

Laurie, the lable just says smz tmp, I'm not sure exactly what it is. I fully trust my vet and told her to prescribe whatever she thought would be best for Lidia.

SMZ TMP is generic Bactrim My vet did float and smear (and UA as well) and all was negative, but I'm gonna do at least 2 more weekly checks, just in case..

The SMZ TMP and Panacur are both used to treat protozoal infections such as coccidia and giardia. I had a bout with coccidia a few months ago with a glider that I rescued. She was in poor conditions when I picked her up and there were lots of cats roaming about, most likely the source of the coccidia. Coccidia has an incubation period of 13 days AFTER exposure, when Lynsie posts what exactly this is, you will have a more clear picture of how long to recheck for this. Lynsie, I saw where you said you'd call your vet Monday and get the name of this infection, in the meantime, hoping your baby gets well soon.

I just wanted everyone to know that I took Brando into the vet for a wellness and everything checked out A-OK!!! I hope this didnt scare the the beejeebee's out of everyone. Brando is a happy, healthy but "fluffy" little man. I will continue to take him in weekly for the next few weeks just to be sure. He hadnt been introduced to his new girls as of yet, and I will definately wait till I know all is clear before he does meet them. Thank you all for your concern. And thank you again Kris for my sweet little man!

Suki tested POSITIVE today for hookworms!!! Needless to say, I was FLOORED by the diagnosis! My vet did a float and a smear and tested for giardia, coccidia and parasites and he came back with a positive result for hookworms so I'm now treating ALL of my cages and cleaning and disinfecting daily until eternity or until I feel safe again!

She said hookworms, but according to Cindy, that could be in error depending on the microscope, etc. I've got a call into my vet, however, she prescribed the panacur as well so the treatment is the same, but I will make sure she gets all of the information we have.

Can you guys give GC an update please, I have been told LGG is being updated but some are not members or can not read. And I think that the GC community should be aware of what is going on as much as is known right now. ditto-i'm not on LGG and was involved in Suki's RR

That thread is moving too fast to post everything here too. We hit page 23 and are on like page 5 of a part 2 thread, plus there is a 3rd records thread that is going, so there's no way we can move everything over.

These gliders aren't exhibiting ANY symptoms, as is the case many times with parasites. Some gliders may, but others won't.

I think the most alarming part about how Nina has sick gliders she got from Kris D at SGGA NOOOO this is NOT what was said....what was said was Nina has gliders that have this parasite as well....ONE cyst was found...ONE...therefore we can NOT connect it from this glider having this at the SGGA... It very well just could be that we as a community as a whole do NOT test for this and maybe we should... We do NOT know as of yet WHERE or WHEN this originated, so please not start hitting the panic alarm as of yet....

I agree Peggy. Our dogs are tested annually for worms, so maybe it's something that will need to be done with gliders.

I thought it was expected to do fecals done on yearly exam??? I've always done fecals on yearly exams, actually I do fecals on anyone who hits the vet. Then again my vet and I have had a long relationship with my gliders and other pets, and he is pretty good about costs. So its easy for me to be safe rather than sorry. So I'm going to jump the gun and take everyone in Friday for testing . My prayers are with anyone effected by this.

lauren before a diet scare is started.. that would go for any thing, bottles, food dishes, toys, veggies anything.. how about your carpet or sofa being a culprit, how about your tent or your reptarium, or guess what something as simple as your shirt, your arm, ahhh your lips..

No I said a questionairre should be done that would include any and all variables .. not to exclude diets, as well as who all was in contact with the gliders or in their vicinity, housing toys, etc. There are many possibilities to consider, and no one should jump the gun or blame anyone for anything. there is a process to narrowing down which all gliders may be infected.. or where it started. Our main concern is to get the gliders that may have been infected identified and treated. And as Peggy had touched on....... This could have been avoided, and may not have been the issue it is, if a couple of things had been done and not taken for granted.. Quarantine - minimum of 30 days.......regardless of who you get your gliders from or how old they are Fecal Checks - this should be done when you first get your glider or as a rescue home when they first enter your home, for the first 2 years they should be done every 3 months, after that they should be done at least 2 times a year every 6 months. Fecals are not that expensive, many times you don't even have to take your gliders in, just drop of fecal samples. the fecals can find a lot of hidden problems regarding parasites.

I don't care the slightest bit where it has come from or what it has come from at this point or who gets mad at whom. What I do care about is an identifiable real name of this wormy little booger that I can share w/my vet so that she can know exactly what we are looking for. I would also like any other information, or just point me in the right direction to find it myself as I'm not having luck on my own, as to EVERY precaution I need to be taking to ensure the health of my gliders such as what kills it, what doesn't kill it, can it live without a host, if so for how long, how long can it be dormant, and every other miniscule little tidbit of information I can get to know that I am doing all I can to protect my babies. I don't and won't do LGG and expect the courtesy of being given any information available.

They are called Strongyles. They are a parasite. You need to have a fecal float (and smear if you wish) done by your vet.

They are called Strongyles. They are a parasite. You need to have a fecal float (and smear if you wish) done by your vet. thank u princessmegi-i've heard both the float and the smear now so i will be having both on all 14 of my gliders and now that i have a name for this thing my own attempts at research should come out better

I hope we get all the suggies well really soon. OMG I hate that this happened. As others have said, it shows how important quarantine and hygiene measures are, regardless of where you get your glider from. (Yes, I'm taking this to heart!) I helped railroad Suki. I picked him up last Monday in Gallatin at lunch-time and then drove to SC where Laurie met up with me about 8 PM in SC. He stayed in his pouch inside a pet taxi with the seat belt around it while I drove the 8 hour trip. I gave him some water while he was in his pouch. After Laurie got her baby and we ate dinner at the Cracker Barrel, I then spent 2 nights in Atlanta with my parents. My gliders were not with me on the trip and never had any contact with Suki. Suki, please get better soon! I'm calling my vet tomorrow and I'll see what he thinks about my gliders risk of exposure (I can't think of any but will play it safe). All of them had clear fecals about 3 weeks ago at their wellness exam.

I believe that a "panic" is totally unnecessary on this. Concern...yes but not panic. It is very simple, have fecals done on your gliders. If they test positive, treat them. If not and you are still concerned, wait a couple of weeks and have them tested again. Realistically, we should be having fecals done on our gliders every 6 months or so to check for giardia (a nasty little bug that can stay hidden until the gliders are really sick) and other potential issues so just make sure your vets are checking for other parasites as well. I don't believe this comes back to the HPW diet or the ingredients of the diet. While I am not a fan of repackaged food items for our gliders, realistically, if you are using bee pollen, you are giving your gliders repackaged foods. The Wambaroo powder, again, if you are unsure, don't buy the repackaged foods. Not all vendors sell repackaged wambaroo. But I don't think this traces back to the HPW ingredients. Placing blame or even determining the "source" of this parasite is not going to help the gliders. Only fecal testing and treatment (if necessary) is going to help. If you do have a glider test positive, then by all means, share that with not only those that have recently got gliders from you or you got gliders from but also anyone that has come in contact with you and/or your gliders. If you have an infected glider, you could have a cyst on you (or your clothing) that can be passed to someone who then goes home to their gliders and passes it to them. What this really comes down to is proper sanitizing practices, proper vet care (specifically the fecal exams) and proper quarentine practices of gliders you bring into your home. I have not come in contact with any of these gliders. I had considered taking in my gliders to all be tested kinda as a "control" group. However, this particular type of parasite is equine. I have horses so it is posible that my gliders test positive even though I've had no contact with these other infected gliders or their owners. So, not really a good "control" group after all.

I would also get yourself and the rest of your animals tested if any of your gliders are positive for worms. They can be transferred by contact with feces and you could come in contact with it through cage cleaning. Hookworms and roundworms can and will penetrate your skin.

So are strongyles and hookworms and roundworms all the same thing? What do I need to be asking my vet to look for?

Everything I have read says that strongyles are zoonotic and can be transferred between species.

And, are we sure we are looking at strongyles? They seem to be prominent in equine and bovine type animals and are a bloodworm, not an intestinal worm?

These gliders aren't exhibiting ANY symptoms, as is the case many times with parasites. Some gliders may, but others won't. I have Lidia's sister and so far on 3 fecals in the past 11 days has been clean. I know we're ALL trying to work together and find the common denominator here so that all gliders can be tested/treated that may have it..

B, so are these Large Strongyles (Strongylus vulgaris) or are they the Small Strongyles (Cyathostomes)? That is the 64 million dollar question, Suz. So far, out of all the gliders that are infected, no one has stated which one. Hoping someone will get clarification from the vet soon.

I'm so sorry for everyone that has been infected. Poor Suki, I was supposed to cuddle with you, didn't get a chance, and now I feel guilty that I am happy it turned out that way Now I know about the fecal tests, and will have Sugar & Nibbles tested. Just because I haven't yet, not because we have had any contact (and we haven't). Thanks to all, especially Kris for taking the right steps!

And, are we sure we are looking at strongyles? They seem to be prominent in equine and bovine type animals and are a bloodworm, not an intestinal worm? There are specific families of strongyles that effect marsupials. Its listed in the Merck vet Manual. Strongyles can be host species specific according to my vet as well. There are other worms in the larger family group that can transfer to humans or other animals as well. The parasites can also be hosted by temporary hosts (insects and rodents) as a way to their normal host animal. Here is a piece of what I already posted: From what I gather the strongyle eggs that are showing on glider fecals IS NOT the equine type (also according to my vet, I called and asked). From the Merck vet Manual here are the two recorded SPECIFIC families responsible for the strongyle eggs in gliders: Parastrongyloides and Paraustrostrongylus However, on searching them I can only come up with Austrailian studies done on marsupials and their parasites or Nematode.net which has some good but limited info. Nothing specific like you can find for just say "roundworms" or "hookworms". Parastrongyloides trichosuri is one that effects Brush-Tailed Possums. Or even the root of it "Strongyloides" are directly threadworms and several of those species effect humans. Here's the link: http://www.nematode.net/Species.Summaries/Strongyloides.stercoralis/index.phpThe different bugs are at the bottom. When looking into the Paraustrostrongylus family you can find other Austriailian studies as well. Here is just one: http://www.samuseum.sa.gov.au/Journals/TRSSA/TRSSA_V097/TRSSA_V097_p257p280.pdfAnd on page 12 (warning if you click it is 4.32 MB to load took my work computer a min or so to fully load) you find the listed lengths of these species of worms for Paraustrostrongylus. And from that it appears they are only up to a little bigger than a centimeter. VERY different from their cousins that infect horses (up to 2 inches for large strongyles). And more logical to me. But I wonder why its only Austrailian studies that these bugs come up in. Or even still it may be yet ANOTHER worm in this family. I sure wish someone had an exact species name narrowed down. Would be alot easier to determine life cycle, and such.

Can one of the mods change the title of this post since it seems to be affecting gliders other than those at the Ohio gathering? I don't want folks to ignore the thread because they weren't at that gathering. This is something everyone needs to be aware of.

On the equine link Bourbon posted it says the life cycle of these strongyles can complete in SIX weeks. Now...do we have to worry 6 weeks from now instead of 4?

I will be testing my crew since we have attended some gatherings where affected gliders have also been and just want to be on the safe side.

For anyone who was at the SGGA or any gathering after that, it is asked that you take your gliders in for a fecal float. If you are able to make it to your vets office within 30 minutes time, most can just call ahead and get the vets ok to just bring in your fecal specimen in a baggie. Make sure it is fresh, stays out of the sun and is delivered and tested within 30-45 minutes. If you have several cages, and you are having fecals done, lets say the first one comes up negative, the second comes up positive, you can stop there. Once you have ONE fecal come back positive ALL cages need to be treated. Once you go to the vet and you get this done, I am trying to gather info for Dr.Tristan, so if you could please send the following to me as soon as possible I would appreciate it. You can send it in PM or email to srlb@gtek.biz If you could please, PM me names/ages of all gliders you had tested. vets name Phone number Treatment if any needed. Recheck required when? Where you got your infected glider from. Transport time How many stops were made Did many people handle them in between locations.

I don't care the slightest bit where it has come from or what it has come from at this point or who gets mad at whom. What I do care about is an identifiable real name of this wormy little booger that I can share w/my vet so that she can know exactly what we are looking for. Any experienced vet should be able to notice parasites in fecals without being told the name of one to look for or even someone telling them to look for them. Poop is poop and parasites are parasites, it doesn't matter what animal the poop came from. I believe if you warn or tell a vet to look for something specific- they may doubt what they see and just go ahead and treat just to be safe because the parent obviously is concerned. When I take fecals in- I do just that. The dr usually comes back and tells me they don't see anything but do I have any concerns- nope, it's just fecal check time or I'm doing intro's and wanted to be sure no one had anything. They ask if I have any concerns because not all concerns can be addressed just through a fecal check. This has been how I handle fecal checks with 2 different dr's and they both handled the fecal check after procedure the same. We shouldn't have to tell our vets what to look for or to even tip them off that others are finding something- let them do their job. Now if they come back with they found something but their not sure what it is- then bring up the name of what is possibly floating around. As for the parasite being transmitted through food like HPW powder being repackaged- Parasites need a host- HPW powder or pouches made by a vendor do not supply what parasites need in a host.

Nancy - I have a concern & a question about this.
I was talking to Dr. Kate about the fecals last night & she said that this particular parasite needs to be done in a sugar float because it WON'T show up in a zinc float (which is what they use when looking for giardia & various other things). So, if we don't tell them what we're looking for, then how will they know which float to use?
Further, and I wish I had thought to ask Kate this last night - if they have the option of sugar or zinc and someone just goes in and asks for a fecal without saying what they're looking for, which one do they pick? And if they only pick one, how do they know the glider is 'clean'?

Gina - if that is the case, then many gliders have had this for a long time and I mean years. Because who has ever had a sugar float done? And I don't see that being the case unless each person can say their positive was tested on a sugar float. We have lots of positives across the community and this is the first mention of a sugar float. So if we do a sugar float- will that pick up on giardia or other parasites? If not, then obviously we need to have 2 different floats done at fecal checks. *edited to ask*- I looked up sugar float- it seems to only be done on livestock fecals- so do traditional and exotic vets even do or use sugar floats?

I was at the Expo in Michigan with 3 of my gliders. They never came in contact with any other gliders and Bourbon & Suz were the only ones that even handled them. Do I need to be concerned and have them tested?

Im wondering if "sugar floats" are what is used for equine, bovine, etc. for detecting their species specific strongyles? Sheep even have their own set of strongyle species. It would be a question for a large animal vet as I never inquired WHAT kind of float was used when on the horse farm for all those years. Still waiting on a call from my vet - she does see large animals as well (we have horse areas around) so I'll add that question to the mix. Which float does she use for gliders. To those who have positive results, has your vets given an EXACT species name? Please if you have the scientific name or can call and ask for it it would be helpful in understanding their life cycle.

Do I need to be concerned and have them tested? Who did you get your gliders from & was it recently? If your gliders have NEVER been connected to anyone who has a positive glider, then I'd say you wouldn't have to worry. Though if it has been awhile since you've had a fecal check- it doesn't hurt just to go in for another one. Better to be safe and catch anything early

This is what I have been dealing with since April. I was told it was a fluke (sp) a member of the hook worm family ( vet said more common to birds). On top of that we battle Tric. I bleach everything toys, cage , wheels, pouches. The vet decided cyst may have settled in liver and the kids are not getting high enough dose of meds so we went to double meds and 7 days on 3 weeks off for 3 months. At this time every one LOOKS fine. Last week of treatment we had soft stool. SO I am with you all praying all our babies will get better. Kris has stood by me every step of this with Gemini and the rest of my crew. Thank you Kris. PS I keep my HPW and bee pollen in the freezer per my vet. Since we freeze it anyway after it is mixed it shouldn't make a difference to the nutrients. I told my vet i don't freeze the honey but he pointed out I do once I have the mix made and said that also should not be a contributing factor.

You would think this to be true. If I remember right at the SGGA Dr T. said there are different dyes and if the vet doesn't have the right one the BOOGERS can be missed. I bring this up because I brought Gemini home from the SGGA. I took her to the vet and he said she was clear of parasites. When I took Sprite in he said she was clear as well. He also said if he ever saw a parasite in a glider poo he would take a pic cause they are hard to find. The next day I took Sprite to my Nashville vet and she was loaded with tric and flukes. He also rechecked Gemini and she too had them. If you are not 100% sure always get that second opinion. If I had taken the gliders to Nashville in the first place I may not have lost Sprite.

Gliderma I was at the Mi. Expo and I think I was the only one that had gliders there that could have possibly been connected to any of this and they both tested neg. today. Matchmaker I think it was you that asked about a livestock vets advice on the float. My vet is a livestock vet also and he said the best to use in this case is zinc sulfate.

Well, took my 7 today. They all tested positive for giardia... I am sooooo sad. The good news is that they are all asymptomatic. the rescues had several in their poo (1-2 per view). Sampson and Delialah only had 2 in their whole sample. So, to be on the safe side we are treating with panacur 3 days on and then the 10th day. Sampson and Delilah can't be treated due to the new joey so they are coming to our bedroom until we can treat them. Recheck of fecals in 4 weeks. If the panacur didn't take care of it, then I'll suggest flagyl.
I will be doing fecals every three months for a year. I am just sooooo happy we caught it so early.

Sorry to hear that Brittney.
Karen M. - please contact everyone that adopted from you and advise them to treat. EVERYONE That adopted a glider from Karen should be testing since these showed up with Giardia. They were at the Ohio gathering as well, weren't they Brittney?

I can help a bit with that - I know Brittney is very busy and may not be back on for a bit. Sampson and Delilah are from (PPP) Perfect Pocket PetsAt least 4 of the others are from the 18 rescues Karen Milas took in earlier this year. Don't know about the 7th.

Ok, Val is correct, S&D are from (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets(I have had them since March). 4 are from Karen but she had all 18 tested in September, they all came back negative but were treated just in case. The 7th is S&D's joey that came oop Monday. My gliders were never in direct contact with any other gliders in Ohio. Two of the rescues I have had for 4 weeks, the other 2 I have had for 2 weeks. The giardia numbers are VERY low so this is very recent. A lot of the gliders from the Ohio get together have been tested for parasites and it seems everyone has come back negative. But, I will admit, I made a mistake. I knew Karen quarantined the 18 while they were with her and knew they had been vet checked. So, I did not personally quarantine here. I honestly think though, that since Giardia can be hidden until times of stress, that the trip to Ohio may be what brought this out.

Peggy, can you please check into what the effects of OTC meds would have on gliders. It was mentioned that some mill type breeders have treated gliders with "OTC worm meds" and I'd like to know what that would do to the gliders or parasites. Will the meds really kill the paraisite or just "cover" them for a time? Will or could it make the glider or parasite immune to treatment? We have a few gliders that seem to be harder to beat than what we are hearing from most vets. Is it possible that their parents or grandparents were given OTC's and thereby made the parasite more resistent?

As with any parasite, a false negative is very likely. Brittney, there is probably no way to track where your giardia came from. It could have come from Karens, someone at the Ohio gathering, anyone who handled the gliders before or after they came to you, any used item that they may have had contact with before or after coming to you, the school you attend, a pet store, any item you bought lately for your gliders, etc, etc.... It is very difficult to track giardia. The important thing is that you are treating your babies now.

My understanding is that the test can be negative and the gliders can be treated. But it won't do any good unless it is an active infection.

My two youngest gliders, Zeus (5 mos) and Athena (6 mos), went with me to the recent Ohio gathering. I took them to my vet this afternoon for fecals (freshly delivered right into the specimen cups - gotta' love 'em!) and just got a phone call that both samples tested *negative* for parasites. ANYONE who got fecals done on your gliders...
Positive OR Negative
Please fax over ANY and ALL reports of THAT WHOLE visit to:
I do not have access to a fax, and do not have a hard copy of a vet report, but will PM my info. to Peggy, just in case it may be helpful. I did have some contact with the little RR'ed leu joey - I gave him a mealie in Ohio and he made a pit-stop in my home on his way south. I have many different species of animals in my home and am a stickler for hand-washing ... that may have helped prevent an infection here.

All my cages tested negative, also.
I tested the ones that were at the SGGA; Emi, from Alicia; and my glider from Tanya. I had my results faxed to Peggy. I'm done with all this now, so if there's something more I should do or didn't do right, please PM me.

All tests came back negative! But the vet said it could take up to 6 weeks for any eggs to show up, so I'm not taking any chances and am going to treat everyone anyway. I'm also going to treat them for giardia even though that tested negative too. (I helped railroad the rescues that have it.) He said it won't hurt them, so better to be safe than sorry. I have a joey going to his new home in 3 weeks and I don't want anyone sick!

What are some symptoms of giardia? Is it necessary to test if gliders seem healthy as always. Neither of my fuzzbutts have come in contact with any other gliders or animals. I do alternate taking them to work with me each day. Monday & Weds I take Bandit. Tues & Thurs I take Mojo. Friday I take both of them. Other than work we dont get out much.

Keep in mind, giardia can come from a water source...food not washed well...not just animal to animal contact.

I’m in the process of taking all my glider for fecals. I work for a vet so there is no report. I fix the fecal. I check then a doc checks after me. So far Pepper has had 2 neg fecals and keoni has had one. He is getting a second soon. They were both at the Ohio gathering with me. I am also getting all the others done. So far Hades and Persephone have had neg fecals. Tomorrow I will be taking in samples for Carmella and Ares and Gizmo and Hunni. The that leave my trio who will go next. so just checking, but is it possiable to transfer illnesses like trick, giardia, est. just by someone who has a glider that has it and then pets/handles your glider? or can things like this pre-exist and come back positive due to stress or other factors? what else could give an otherwise heathly glider these illnesses save for the obivious (dirty cage/pouch or bad diet)? Most of these parasites are transmitted through poop to mouth contact and I believe all must stay moist to survive. If someone handles a glider and is pooped on and turns around and immediately handles another glider who licks them, then it is technically possible to transmit something. This holds true for clothing as well (if something stays on the clothing and is transferred to the second glider who then grooms it off). The most obvious concern is with gliders having diarrhea, as that is a wet contact easily passed on to another person/glider/etc. What are some symptoms of giardia? Is it necessary to test if gliders seem healthy as always. As Karin said, Giardia does not just come from unclean conditions, it is around us ALL of the time. It is in the water supply, it is on fruits and vegetables. Most kids come in contact with it on a regular basis (pretty much every time you get in a swimming pool, you've just been exposed). The difference is, most people and animals can fight off the infection, or have a bought of diarrhea and never realize they've even had Giardia. It is when the immune system is compromised or depressed (because of recent illness, stress, etc.) that Giardia can take hold and make a person or animal sick. Symptoms can include (but you will not necessarily see); loss of appetite weight loss dehydration diarrhea lethargy yellow/orange stool very bad smelling stool pain (potentially leading to SM) Just because they are not showing symptoms, does not mean that they are not carrying the parasite. Gliders are fantastically adept at hiding illness and particularly with a parasite like Giardia, sometimes they will never get most of the symptoms associated with it. If you think there may be a chance of exposure, they need to be tested.

If we never loved, then maybe we would never feel pain. Love anyway. It's worth it.
