This barring under the ear thing in the so called wf blond hets...I have noticed it some of my Leucistic Hets as well. Spacing or fading of the two black barrs.

Lenya...your theory sounds good but I have not totally asorbed it yet. Will have to go and reread your response again.

Recessive genes...both parents have to carry it in order to express the color they are recessive to.

If the White Face Blonde is Recessive...then it would need both parents to express the coloration in order to produce it.

WF Blonde and a Standard Gray....will produce both variations. This then could not be a recessive gene that is producing the WF Blonde.

Actually, I think there are plenty of people who purchase WFBs and other colors, and have money issues. Personally, my bills and rent come first, but I know there are people that would rather pay the money for colored gliders than to pay rent or bills or other obligations. I am certainly far from rich; heck, we are barely making it, but with careful planning and budgeting it can be done. This last WFB I bought really killed my budget, but it was an opportunity I needed to take advantage of. I won't be evicted or anything, but things like eating out and go to movies aren't going to be available for us for a while!

I also think that most people that buy a pair of hets, want to get their WFBs the "cheap way". Of course, a pair of hets is the same price, if not more, than a single WFB, so it doesn't add up, but I can see the theory behind it.

Personally I would love to try to have a few pairs of possible het to possible het, but I just don't have the room for it. If and when my pairs do have hets, I can have a pair where one has 4 WFB grandparents, and the other has 3, and I think that might be ideal to see if it really can be done. Perhaps I may have to *make* room for that pairing!

I have talked to Flying Fur Ranch before about the het to het breeding three years ago. They have seen WFB's come out of two het breedings. I would imagine this would be rare. I would think that if you had a second or third generation het on male and female sides with both parents and grandparents being WFB it would increase your chances. The WFB is not like the Leucistic. You cannot put two normal color hets (from two blonde parents) together and expect them them to get blondes 25% of the time as you would get a white in a Leucistic het paring.
Mickey, It will take several years of careful breeding to see if the normal color can be bred out. I have two 2nd generation blondes set up that have produced 5 out of 5 white faced blonde joeys. They are the pair that produces the Sunkissed joeys. Their son, a third generation blonde was put with a female third generation blonde and produced two WFB females. Judie has one of the females from this original pair and I am not sure what she has gotten from it. I think she has it paired with a 2nd generation male.
I have another WFB pair that has three out of the four parents WFB and one parent a Strawberry Blonde glider(not white faced) which is a rare color. They have had 5 joeys and 4 have been WFB. I do not have any hets for wfb so I cannot prove any theories there, but I would think a WFB het out of two WFB's would be stronger breeding out the normal color. This is not what Chris is saying, but I believe the percentages do go up with offspring as you get into the 2nd and third generation pair, based on what I have here. I will say some of my hets are lighter in color than others. I know that color is not a 100% indicator that the gene is present, but I do see a variance of color in the het offspring. My Third generation pair has another joey in pouch. I will be anxious to see if it is another blonde. Also, I have sold the other third generation blondes to Blue sky, Judie H., Pricilla P., and Big Ern. I am anxious to see what the offspring of these glider end up being in comparison with other 3rd generation WFB breeders.

Cindy with Suncoast gliders has just produced a WFB out of two hets. The hets' parents were both blonde meaning the baby has 4 blonde grandparents.

Well, that's refreshing news on the het scene
I suspected that hets from two wf parents might be more likely to produce wf babies
So, maybe hets from two wf parents can be called hets and standards from one wf parent can be called possible hets?

Thank you Sheila for finding that out. I will see what happens then with my 2 wfb het pairs. I just found it hard to beleive that you could not get a wfb out of the hets.

Because the ratio of the possibility of producing wf blonde from two wf blonde hets is low...most who are wanting to breed for this variation do not want to take the time in trying to produce wf blondes from the het to het breedings....since it is easier to just pair a wf blonde het to a wf blonde or a Standard color to a wf blonde.

Do hope we will see a photo of this special little offspring from the two wf blonde hets.

I would like to apologize, my last post was poorly worded. I would just like it noted that I never said either way that WFB hets could or could not produce WFB joeys, just that I didn't think they could because I had yet to hear a legitimate claim that 2 hets had produced a WF. Not to be cynical, but honestly, I still won't believe it until I see pictures, but that is neither here nor there... I do think that the WFB trait is controlled by several genes though and that the 2 hets would have to have the right combination of absent and present genes to produce WF joeys. I didn't word that clearly in my last post and it came off sounding like I thought that 2 hets wouldn't produce WF's, which is not the case. I think that one has to have a bit of luck on their side when pairing WF hets though, in order for the genes to match up right and produce WF's and that the probability of producing gliders with diluted markings is much high since many hets exhibit the diluted marking trait to begin with.

Judie, in regards to your question as to why I don't pair WF hets together... I personally feel no need. I have 2 WF gliders that come from a normal and a WF. Since I can get WF's from diluted lines already, I feel no need for het to het pairings. Also, since WFB's can be produced by WF's paired with normals, I also feel no need to pair my WF's with hets, but then again, it doesn't really matter to me if they produce WF's, I just want happy, healthy gliders and joeys.
