NUGGET UPDATE:

Val just called me and we have good news and bad news.

The Good News is: HE HAS NO SPINAL DAMAGE

The Bad News is: His right leg, the bone is crushed from his hip joint to his foot (crushed beyond repair) & his left leg, the bone is crushed from his knee to his foot (which they are going to keep an eye on). He has lots of swelling in the lower part extremities of his back and both legs. He is still pretty young approx 5 months old and is still growing. So we are not sure what his outcome will be.

Treatment for now: pain medication because he does have what they call deep pain feeling. There is so much swelling that he feels touch, but not pain. Lots of TLC and being restricted to a small cage will help with his healing progress.

I was also suppose to pass on that little Nugget was an angel today when they did his x-rays. He just laid still on the table and looked really cute for the doctor and nurses. No anesthesia of any kind and they were able to get 6 different sets of x-rays.

Please keep your prayers coming for Little Nugget he has along healing process to go through but we know he is in good hands and Val will see he has everything he needs to make that as easy as possible.

yes please keep us updated on what they are going to do for him. Is it possible they can repair his left leg and possibly amputate his right? If that is possible then at least he can have the most mobility possible for him. He is so young what a rough way to start life with someone being so cruel to him. I am so glad he is now safe with someone that will love him and take care of him.

Like I said, he is still pretty young and they are going to watch and evaluate him as he grows to see what can be done. I know they talked about all kinds of different treatments even amputation of his right leg and doing some kind of pinning the left leg. But Val can come on and explain that part. I think they are just going to wait right now because he is still growing.

I just have such a hard time believing that someone could squeeze a glider so hard as to shatter the bones.

Anita, thank you so much for the update and the pictures. I love that little guy. He's such a fighter and he will do well even though his outcome doesn't seem the best right now. Nugget holds a special place in my heart.

I talked to Val last night. She is in Tulsa for a bird show today. So when she gets back to a computer she will post. She told me he is the sweetest glider ever.

OMGosh, It is just so hard to fatham anyone doing that kind of damage to anything. Poor little Nugget. What a good boy he is. I am so glad he has found a loving home.

Seriously, I mean what on earth force would you have to use to CRUSH the bones in his little legs? I'm just sick to my stomach about that. I really don't think that you could do that with you hands.

Whoever did that to him should be in jail.

Nugget is home. His FOREVER home.
He is so sweet and precious - it is almost indescribable how he is able to capture your heart so quickly. Dr. Walsh said that he is by far the sweetest glider that ever came into their office. (He said that about Jackie before, but even I have to agree that Nugget has Jackie beat in the sweetness department.)

Guys, I am going to be honest here: My head is swirling with all the information and options given for Nugget's care. I am grateful for the vet's insistance that we give him at least 2 more weeks to reduce some swelling before we do anything (if anything can be done). Also, I am not so quick to agree that there is nothing that can be done for his right leg. After all, I serve a God of miracles, Who has been free with dishing out the miracles to Jackie so far! I am determined to make the best possible plan of care for Nugget. So, I will have to do more research and more thinking and LOTS of Praying.... So many tears have been shed for him already - even the vet techs cried with me when the x-rays went up - and those that didn't cry were left speechless. Following the initial gasps, you could have heard a pin drop in that room for several minutes.

WE are all outraged and sickened at the thought that anyone could purposefully do this to a tiny glider: - to any animal at all really. Nugget is the face of what abuse looks like in a glider. BUT, I am not going to allow myself to feel all that - it doesn't do Nugget any good. IF I have learned anything from Jackie Chan's history, it is this: It is not time that heals all wounds, it is LOVE that heals all wounds. There is no shortage of love for Nugget here.

I will need a glider to love on since I can not bring mine so Nugget can be my weekend buddy! Pushing Auntie Anita over to get my hands on him.

It has been 4 months since Nugget made his way to my home. Seems like just yesterday!

I know I have not updated very well. Things happen around here and time gets away from me. But, to recap Nugget's story and progress:

Nugget was found to have multiple breaks and eggshell cracking in both back legs, but no spinal damage. Suggested treatments and courses of action included everything from amputation of both legs to putting pins in and on and on. Many did not agree with my choice of action, but I now KNOW I did right by Nugget.

Despite the horrific condition of Nugget's legs, he was not in any pain. He literally did not act like anything had happened. He was so young that he just adjusted and went on with life. Once the swelling was down, he began using his tail like normal. I just could not bring myself to cut into him given how happy and sweet he was. I heard so many "what if's" re: future pain, and I decided I would deal with the "what ifs" when and if they became reality. After all, WHAT IF he was able to heal and gain SOME use of those legs?

Well, WHAT IF became reality. Nugget DID heal. Given some pain medication, a hospital cage and physical therapy/massage, Nugget's healing was amazing!
His left leg healed up AS IF it had been pinned. He has FULL use of his left leg now!
2 of the worst breaks in his right leg healed AS IF they had been pinned. The break at the hip fused in a manner which allows him use of the joint, and the eggshell cracking healed as if it had never been there. Nugget's use of his back right leg is fair-good. He does have some issues with balance due to his hips not working exactly as he would like. Possibly some residual neurological issues in this back legs, but overall, he is very functional and very, very sweet.

Nugget has been alone all of his life..... Until last night. Last night, Nugget and Chowder were very easily introduced and they are SO cute together! Chowder had previously been paired with another of my gliders, but they could not get along at all, so now Chowder is living with Nugget. Nugget is alone no more! I am so happy for him!!!! With so much sad news around here lately, it sure is nice to have a few really good things happen. Nugget is a doll. If you get the chance, you should stop by and meet him at the SGGA.

So glad to hear he healed up so well and will be living an almost normal life. I wish the person who did this to him had to deal with some repercussions...sick, just sick!
