Thank you very much... So, basically, If I find a responsible breeder who has no known record of inbreeding or unhealthy gliders, I should not be worried about purchasing a WF and a Lion from them? Also, what about buttercremes? Are they in the same group as lions and cinnamons? Thanks for ALL your help, I just wanted to do right by gliders.

That is correct. Also buttercreams aren't really bred for. It is just a really creamy color that seems to pop up, although some do have buttercream pairs.

Another question has been bothering me. I see many times when looking at breeders that they may have a WFB for sale who I fall in love with, but the price is HUGE. I know why, its because they are either a het for some rare color, or they are a certain generation, like 4th. But, I don't ever plan on breeding. I have enough to worry about, so I'm just gonna concentrating on loving my babies and hoping they are happy when I get them. So, I have two questions. One: How would I convey this to a breeder so they would believe me, and sell me the glider at a lower price? And two: What is the big deal about generations in WF? Is it for breeding?

So, I have two questions. One: How would I convey this to a breeder so they would believe me, and sell me the glider at a lower price? And two: What is the big deal about generations in WF? Is it for breeding? 1. How can you convey that your not going to breed? Well that comes with time, breeders have to trust and know you, or, and this is the easiest way, you buy a male in the color you want, like, wfb, and you pay to have him neutured before you get him. You can get lots of gliders cheaper if they are neutered or from a sterile line. And the only way you'll know if it's possible, is to ask the breeder. As for buying a female, unless you know the breeder, have connected in some way, they prob. won't sell cheaper because they don't know you well enough to know you won't breed. Neutered male, no question. Higher generations of wfbs, just means that they will usually have only wfb joeys, and... they tend to get lighter and lighter with each generations, we have seen up to 5th generation, I can't really see a difference between them and say a 4th generation, but you can clearly see a difference usually between a 1st generation wfb and a 4th. This is my suggestion to you, if you want a pet only, buy what you really want, and get him neutered. Good luck to you.

So, if I got TWO females would they lower the price? Since then they know I'm not breeding?

Probably not. You could still buy a male afterwards and then have a breeding trio. Some breeders will trust you (and make you sign a contract) but that usually takes time for you to really get to know the breeder and for them to know and trust your intentions.

Again depends on the breeder and the trust between you two .. as having females you ‘could’ get a male from some place and then still breed …

Well, I'll be on this board for at least 4 years before I get my gliders. So I'm sure I'll become with some breeders in that time!

Well, I don't know. I haven't really thought about it. I just assumed I would get females because I was going to get them next year, so I didn't want my mom to complain about the smell (and yes, I know females still have some smell) . I geuss now I just want two females because, for as long as I've wanted gliders, that's what I've always wanted. So I would prefer two females, but I geuss I could get two neutered males.

Neutered males don't smell like an unneutered male. They won't smell any more than a female.

line breeding is sort of like inbreeding instead of doing parent/child or sibling/sibling pairings, it uses cousin/cousin, grandparent/grandchild, etc. so it's like inbreeding on a slightly lesser scale because the pairings are not quite as closely related (but still too related to attempt for all but the most experienced breeders!)

I don't think that should ever be attempted, weather your an experienced breeder or not. Inbreeding is inbreeding, no matter how distant of relatives, and inbreeding is wrong. I don't have a problem with color variations and breeding for color at all, but I do have a problem with inbreeding just to get a specific color.

The problem is this topic has already been "debated" to death and I doubt you will find any takers to "duke it out" with. Good luck though!

I wouldn't do that if I were you.....creating drama for ths sake of it. I can't answer that question, I don't breed. Why just females? I am curious. I don't think thinere is a difference between males and females, as far as personality (well, each glider has their own, but I don't find it is a male vs female type of thing). So if you don't intend to breed, why not just get two neutered males?

Ah ok. Well, I'll post my closing opinion thanks to all this. I feel that breeding and buying for color is fine. As long as you put the glider's health and wellbeing ten times more ahead of what color they are. But it is wrong if they are inbread now or are overbread. So, if you want to spend the extra $100 to $1,000 (like me) then go ahead as long as you responsibly look for a reputable breeder.

No, just curious why, esp. if it would make it a little easier to get a better price on a glider (if you had him neutered before he came to you).

True, but.... I just like female animals better. I have nothing against males, I have a male dog. I just prefer females. I don't know why.
